Saved For Not From the Cross

April 9 * Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion

~"Hosanna!" Mark 11:9

"Hosanna" originally meant "save!" The crowd uses it to acclaim Jesus as the One they think has come to save them. "Blessed is the kingdom of our father David!" they shout. David's kingdom was earthly, political. They think Jesus has come to liberate them from their Roman occupiers. By week's end, they will see that their hopes were misplaced. Jesus' death will demonstrate that He is not their political Messiah after all.

Some of us, I think, have been in that crowd. We stirred up faith that Jesus had come to save us from the suffering we most dreaded. We hoped He would be our medical Messiah, our financial Messiah, our legal Messiah. But He wasn't. Rather than saving us from our cross, He joined us on it.

In the liturgy today, we acclaim Jesus as the Savior. In the procession with palms, all eyes are focused on Him. If we keep our eyes on Him throughout this week and be open to God's grace, we can grow in seeing Him as the Savior He has come to be.
